Make your own soap

Back in Laura Ingalls Wilder's day, you couldn't just pop down to the nearest big-box store when you needed to buy household supplies like soap. Most of the modern "essentials" we use every day, Ma did without or made her own. Lately, many people are going back to making their own cleaning products in an effort to save money, be more environmentally friendly, customize the product to their needs, experience the old-fashioned life, or all of these.

You, too, can experiment with making your own soap at home. I've provided a few links below - two articles (take your pick) and a video - with instructions for soapmaking. You will need only a few ingredients and supplies from your local hardware store, craft store, or grocery store. Be sure to read all the safety instructions before you get started, as the ingredients can be dangerous if handled improperly. Enjoy this "Little House"-inspired activity!
