First of all, what is a straw tick? Wiktionary defines the term as follows:
Why, do you ask, are straw ticks the subject of today's post? Well, in chapter 10 "Mary Goes to College" of Little Town on the Prairie, Laura Ingalls Wilder mentions that her family slept on straw ticks.
When I was a very young "Little House" fan, I wanted to be just like Laura, and one of the things I needed was a real straw tick to sleep on. I tried so hard to convince my parents to buy some ticking (the coarse fabric used to make the mattress bag) and make me a straw tick of my own.
What was I thinking? Of all the ways I could wish to reenact "Little House" moments, I chose sleeping on what is probably the world's least comfortable mattress. I guess I had a strange childhood. Or maybe I was just a very dedicated Laura Ingalls Wilder fan. Or maybe I was just a strange young person. Or perhaps all of these?
When did you realize you had taken your fandom too far?
Elizabeth
