Pet and Patty

My first order of business for today's post is to thank all of you, my readers, for making April 2013 my biggest month to date on LHCO thus far. Thanks for reading and sharing (past and future!)

So, who were Pet and Patty?

If you turn to the middle of Little House on the Prairie chapter 1 "Going West", you can read how Pa traded his "tired brown horses" for two "western mustangs." He said, " 'They're strong as mules and gentle as kittens.' ... When Laura asked what their names were, Pa said that she and Mary could name them. So Mary named one, Pet, and Laura named the other, Patty."
The difference between mustangs like Pet and Patty and horses like Pa's tired brown ones is that mustangs are free-roaming wild horses, descendants of horses brought to North America by the Spanish. Mustangs are small and hardy. This made them a good choice for the Ingalls family because Pa, Ma, Laura, Mary, and baby Carrie had so far to travel.

Which "Little House" animals are your favorite?
(For ideas, read some previous posts!)

  1. The meaning and the feeling keeps on changing as we grow up, as we understand about love, as we feel and know the subject of our love in my site
