Can anyone name the "Little House" story in which this word appears?
Do you give up? I'll show you the story...
In Little Town on the Prairie (linked above), the little town of De Smet holds a spell-down for entertainment one evening. The Ingalls family spells exceptionally well, and Pa even spells down the whole town. "Xanthophyll", which means a type of yellow pigment, was his winning word.
Have you ever participated in a spelling bee? These days they are more of a geeky school event (I should know, I competed in a few), but in Laura Ingalls Wilder's time, they were a fun form of friendly competition and educational entertainment. Hardcore "Little House" fans can reenact the story from Little Town on the Prairie above by gathering a group of friends and taking turns spelling prairie-themed words. Have fun!
