Sourdough... yum!

Remember the story in By the Shores of Silver Lake when Laura and Ma taught Mrs. Boast how to make sourdough bread? You, too, can make your own sourdough! Any type of home-baked bread is delicious, but the tang of sourdough is especially yummy, in my opinion.

Here's how to make the essential ingredient in sourdough bread, a starter. A chemist or microbiologist could probably better explain the science behind sourdough starters and why they work. Once you have your sourdough starter, you add a bit to every batch of bread you make and keep a bit for the next time. There are sourdough starters in existence today that had their origins in the 1700s!

Finally, to round out today's post, a bit of trivia. Did you know? "Sourdough" is also an old-fashioned slang term that means, according to Wiktionary,
An old-timer, especially in Alaska. From the distinctive pouches of bread starter worn on a belt or around the neck by experienced prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush.
Thanks for reading, and sorry this post was so late today.
