Robert Alden, born on today's date in 1836, was a minister and "home missionary." He had a church in the East, but was sent to plant a church in the town of Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where the Ingalls family met him. When the family left, they never dreamed that he would resurface years later in Dakota Territory. Pa and Ma, as well as all the girls, had great respect for Reverend Alden and thought of him as a friend as well.
You can read more about Reverend Alden's real life on Wikipedia and Laura Ingalls Wilder, Frontier Girl.
