On Almanzo Wilder's ninth birthday, he was finally old enough to begin "breaking" or training a pair of calves. It seems astonishing these days that someone so young would be given so much responsibility, but Almanzo was up to the task. Through perseverance and some ingenuity, he was able to raise a reliable team of oxen.
Here's a picture of Almanzo and his calves, Star and Bright, from the Garth Williams cover art of Farmer Boy.
If you want to read the full story of how Almanzo trained Star and Bright, turn to Farmer Boy chapter 5 "Birthday" and chapter 9 "Breaking the Calves." Happy reading!Come back on Friday for more Little House fun!
