An edible craft! Or, a crafty snack!

Many years ago, there was a Little House in the Big Woods Club full of giggly girls (me and friends) excited about making their own sunbonnets and reading the "Little House" books. For one of the club meetings, some heroic parents (mine) came up with an idea to keep them entertained.

This idea came about with inspiration from Martha Stewart's magazine. An activity in the February 2001 issue suggested celebrating Presidents' Day by making a pretzel log cabin reminiscent of Abraham Lincoln's boyhood home. You know who else grew up in a log cabin? Laura Ingalls Wilder! So naturally, we had to make our own pretzel log cabins.
Would you look at that picture-perfect Martha Stewart cabin? I'm pretty sure none of ours turned out so well.
The concept is simple - almost like building a gingerbread house, only much easier. First, you cover an empty half-pint milk container in peanut butter. Then, you press pretzel rods into the peanut butter to look like logs constructing the walls of a cabin. You can use graham crackers for the roof if you like, and accessorize to your heart's content. When you're done building, you have the equally fun task of eating your log cabin. If peanut butter isn't your thing, you can probably use another nut butter, cream cheese, or icing of some kind (although those last two would make for a rather unhealthy snack...)

If you're a fan of pretzels, peanut butter, log cabins, or any combination thereof, try out this slightly messy but delicious and fun activity. I think I found the original article! Astonishing, the power of the internet is.

When I was writing that beginning paragraph, I realized that I haven't shared the story of LHCO lately. This page on the blog has a little bit of background information if you're curious.

Hope you enjoyed this post. I'd love to know your reactions - talk back to me in the comments or the social media below!
