Six days until Christmas!
In The Long Winter, the Ingalls family prevents (log) cabin fever by knitting, storytelling, and singing their way through the winter of blizzards. Winter where I am might not be quite so extreme, but I, too, have a little bit of spare time to fill. Go to page 179 of The Long Winter (linked above) to read about Mary's rag rug, which inspired my latest Little House-inspired craft project.
When I was moving into my college dorm, I realized that I have way too much stuff. I have an unjustifiable amount of clothes, and I have so many gadgets that I never seem to use. I resolved to wear things out and not replace them, thus paring down my collections over time.
My next dilemma was what to do with the worn-out things. Like any good "Little House" enthusiast, I decided to start making a rag rug. I cut well-worn clothes into one-to-two-inch strips, sewed the strips end to end where necessary, braided them together, and began sewing in a spiral.
Above are the beginnings of my rag rug, or, seen another way, the remains of two matchless socks and a camisole that fell apart.
At the moment it's more of a rag placemat than a rag rug, but as time goes on, I'll add to it.
Thanks for reading LHCO! Come back soon.
