27 Days Until Christmas!
Thanks for visiting my Little House Club Online blog! Today I have an old-fashioned recipe to share with you as part of my Holiday Recipe Bonanza.
In Farmer Boy chapter 18 "Keeping House", Almanzo and his siblings get into many pieces of mischief, but one of the funniest is the time when they make candy and Almanzo's pig Lucy gets into a sticky situation. Laura Ingalls Wilder writes, "In the kitchen Eliza Jane and Royal were arguing about candy. Royal wanted some, but Eliza Jane said that candy-pulls were only for winter evenings. Royal said he didn't see why candy wouldn't be just as good in the summer." In the Little House Cookbook, Barbara M. Walker explains that winter temperature and humidity were what made candy-making possible in the winter and not in the summer.
If you have a spare winter evening, try this recipe for molasses taffy like the kind the Wilder children made. Have help on hand to pull the candy! Part of the fun is the social aspect of the candy-pull. Be sure you don't feed any candy to the pig, though. *wink*
