Today is Halloween, so tonight, people all across the country will be putting on creative costumes and going out trick-or-treating.
Do you want to add a little bit of "Little House" to your Halloween? Here are a couple ideas:
--Obviously, you could dress up as your favorite "Little House" character. Old-timey dresses and sunbonnets are easy to find or make.
--If you're staying home to pass out treats, you could make old-timey snacks instead of the standard modern candy. Check out some past posts for inspiration.
While I was thinking about this post, I realized that Halloween is never mentioned in the "Little House" books. I wonder why this is?
According to Wikipedia, during Laura's lifetime, Halloween was beginning to be celebrated in the United States. Perhaps when Laura was growing up, the holiday had not yet spread to the frontier, where the Ingalls family was living.
It's also possible that Ma and Pa discouraged the holiday, if they were aware of it, because they felt it to be a bad influence. We know for sure that they celebrated holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas because those holidays emphasized God's provision and the importance of family.
