Did you notice something intriguing in the "Dance at Grandpa's" chapter? At one point it says, "Uncle James and Aunt Libby had come with their little girl, whose name was Laura Ingalls, too." Who is this mysterious second Laura Ingalls?
It seems that Laura Ingalls Wilder might have been mistaken in her recollection of relatives, since Landsford "James" Ingalls did not have a daughter named Laura but his brother Hiram did. Nevertheless, this second Laura Ingalls was a very real person who lived from 1869 to 1943. In the story mentioned in Little House in the Big Woods, she was about a year and a half younger than our very own Laura Ingalls. Here's all the information I could find about the second Laura Ingalls with some moderate-depth internet research.
Many of the incidental characters in the "Little House" books are very obscure historical figures, so it's difficult to find photographs of them or even the most basic facts about their lives. Still, it's interesting to learn about them and speculate about what their lives must have been like.
Thanks for reading! Have a good weekend, and come back to LHCO soon.
