Welcome back, loyal LHCO readers! Welcome, new readers! Today's post might give you an idea for a pie to add to your Christmas spread - or perhaps you will enjoy it sooner than that. After all, Christmas is the season for good things to eat. But first, the countdown to Christmas:
Fifteen days until Christmas!
One of the delicious desserts mentioned in the "Little House" Christmas celebrations is dried apple pie with raisins. Below is a recipe from a cookbook published in 1831. This page has a modern adaptation with measurements. You can find another recipe for dried apple pie in the Little House Cookbook.
Have you read all the "Little House" stories about the Ingalls and Wilder families' Christmas celebrations? One of my favorites is found in By the Shores of Silver Lake chapters 19-21. This story really shows the true spirit of Christmas - hospitality, family, friends - and includes some great descriptions of the Ingalls family's traditions, gifts, and delicious foods. Thanks for reading LHCO!
