Boston brown bread
One of many varieties of bread mentioned in the "Little House" books is something known as Boston brown bread. This is similar to rye 'n' injun and graham bread. It's made with brown flour (often whole wheat, sometimes other grains) and sweetened just a touch with molasses. Sometimes raisins are added to complement the nutty flavor.
Interestingly, Boston brown bread is traditionally cooked in a can, and it's steamed, not baked. If you'd like to try a modernized recipe for Boston brown bread, look no further.
