Remember the story in chapter 21 of Farmer Boy about the county fair? The Wilder family took prizes in almost everything they entered, including the girls' woolwork and jellies. Almanzo watched spectacular horse races with Father. And most notably, Almanzo won first prize for his milk-fed pumpkin - and learned some important life lessons along the way. I love the way Laura Ingalls Wilder weaves in a bit of wholesome family values in the midst of a great story.
As it turns out, the Franklin County Fair in Malone, New York (where Almanzo grew up) is still going strong after 162 years (since 1850). Field trip, anyone? Thanks for reading LHCO!
